So…what exactly are employers looking for in a quality Security Officer?
Good question.
Believe it or not, most employers are looking for a few basic qualities. Take a look for yourself and see if you meet these standards. If not…you’ve got some work to do!
What Employers Want in a Security Officer
Sharp Appearance – clean, pressed uniform. Shiny shoes. Cropped hair. No beards or goatees. No earrings (ears, nose or lip) Good hygiene.
Alert and Attentive – Make yourself a presence. Walk or drive around and be visible. Do not stick to a set pattern or schedule when conducting patrols on foot or in a vehicle.
Ability to Communicate – The ability to read, write, and speak English is required 99% of the time. Good communication skills can make a huge difference when dealing with difficult people. Foreign languages are acceptable and even required in certain communities. How do you say “Let me see your hands” in Vietnamese?
Command Presence – Security Officers are constantly in the spotlight. Always remember that there are a hundred eyes watching you and your actions.
Display confidence at all times. Keep the crooks guessing your next move. Let them know that you are not going to look the other way. Take your hands out of your pockets.
Many times the role of a Security Officer is prevention. You won’t prevent much if you look and act like a scared rabbit.
Training & Experience – Security Officers should be familiar with common crime statutes and penal codes related to the state where you are working. Your training and knowledge of how to handle a situation is a direct reflection of your value to the client. Big mistakes or poor decisions can cost a bundle to rectify.
Ex: Would you arrest someone for parking in a handicap stall without a placard? Think about it…
